Hearing that a dental implant can fail sounds worrying, but dental implant failure is rare. When failure does happen, there’s usually a reason behind it. Most implants heal successfully and continue to function well for many years.

This is why your dentist conducts a detailed assessment before planning your dental implant treatment, to help identify and reduce potential risks from the start.

What actually causes dental implant failure?

There isn’t usually one single cause. Dental implant failure can happen when the implant doesn’t get the support it needs or when healing doesn’t go as expected.

Bone levels can affect whether there’s enough support for the implant to sit securely. How well you heal determines whether the implant bonds properly with the jawbone in those first few months. General health can play a part too. Conditions like diabetes, for example, can slow healing down, which is something your dentist takes into account when planning your treatment.

Early failure: the first few months

Early failure happens when the implant hasn’t bonded with the jawbone during this healing period. Infection is one of the more common causes because it can interrupt healing before the implant has settled properly. Smoking can slow things down too by reducing blood flow to the gums, and that’s why your dentist discusses it before your treatment begins.

Late failure: years down the line

Late failure can feel unfair after years of an implant working well, but it’s rarely without a clear cause. This is different from early failure. The main cause here is usually an infection that develops around an implant that’s already bonded, similar to gum disease but affecting the tissue and bone supporting the implant itself. It tends to build gradually, which is why regular reviews matter. Grinding or clenching can add extra strain over time too, and a night guard can help protect your implant from that.

Can dental implant failure be prevented?

Most of what puts an implant at risk is within your control.

Clean around it the way you would a natural tooth. Keep up with your review appointments so small changes can be picked up early. It’s a similar routine to how good check-ups protect natural teeth over time. If smoking or grinding are part of your picture, your dentist will talk it through with you rather than leave you guessing.

Looking after your implant long term

Looking after a dental implant doesn’t stop once treatment is complete. Regular hygiene visits and review appointments help keep your implant healthy and allow any concerns to be picked up early.

Dental implant placement starts from £1,700, and full implant pricing details are available if you’d like a clearer picture of the costs involved.

Frequently asked questions

This is the main thing patients ask us, and in most cases, the answer is yes. Once the cause has been identified and treated, for example by clearing an infection or allowing the area to heal, a new implant can often be placed. Your dentist would check the site first.

No. When caught early at a routine review, most issues are straightforward to manage. Complexity usually comes from problems being left, not from the issue itself.

Get it looked at promptly. Swelling, redness, a loose feeling when you bite, or ongoing discomfort are all worth a check. Most of the time it’s something minor.

Many keep working for 15 years or more, and some last for decades. Your cleaning routine and habits like grinding or smoking make the biggest difference.

Yes, it can. Smoking reduces blood flow to the gums, which slows healing and makes it harder for the implant to bond with the bone. Your dentist will talk through what that means for you at your consultation, rather than leave you to work it out on your own.

It can. The bacteria involved are closely related, so gum disease elsewhere in the mouth can put a nearby implant at risk. Treating it early helps protect both your natural teeth and your implant.

Not always. If the implant is still stable, treating the underlying cause, such as an infection, may be enough. Removal is usually only needed if the implant has become loose or the surrounding bone can no longer support it.

If you’re not sure about implants, or want to understand more about dental implant failure, we’re happy to talk it through. Church Street Dental Practice is based in Houghton-le-Spring and sees patients from across Durham and Tyne & Wear who want an honest conversation about what’s involved.
