Fluoride can be confusing, as myths often blur the lines between what is true and and what is false. To help you understand, here’s a breakdown of common myths about fluoride, coupled with the essential facts.

• Myth 1: Fluoride Is a Harmful Chemical: Fluoride is a naturally occurring element found in foods and bodies of water. Trace amounts exist in rivers, lakes, oceans, and even the human body. It’s far from being a toxic compound.
• Myth 2: Fluoride Is Exclusively for Whitening Teeth: While technically true, this notion is incomplete. Fluoride’s primary role is to prevent tooth decay and enhance teeth’s resistance. While it’s not mandatory for a fresh, clean smile, it significantly aids in maintaining cavity-free teeth. Remember, protecting teeth from cavities is the main goal of oral care. Opting for fluoride-free toothpaste is a choice, but it necessitates heightened dietary vigilance, including reducing sugar and processed food intake.
• Myth 3: Fluoride Is Unsafe for Children: Excessive consumption of anything can be risky, including fluoride. To ensure safety, use children’s fluoride toothpaste. For kids up to two years, opt for toothpaste with 1,000 parts per million (ppm) fluoride. From ages two and above, switch to 1,350-1,500 ppm fluoride. Once permanent teeth emerge (usually around age six), transition to adult toothpaste, containing around 1500 ppm fluoride. Interestingly, some children prefer the milder taste of children’s toothpaste.
• Myth 4: Excessive Fluoridated Toothpaste Is Harmful: Fluoride’s role in dental care is nuanced. It appears beneficial when topically applied via toothpaste or dentist-prescribed gels. Excessive use, however, can lead to dental fluorosis. Mild cases show faint white lines or specks on teeth, while severe instances cause enamel pitting or discoloration.
