Our facial aesthetician, Chloe, has many years of experience in providing profile balancing and dermal fillers to patients in Durham. We use premium filler brands including Teoxane® and Restylane®, offering a choice of dermal filler treatments for the lips, jawline, cheeks and chin, helping to reduce wrinkles and give your face a fuller, more youthful appearance.

The dermal filler process

Dermal fillers are a non-surgical cosmetic procedure which uses small injections to reduce wrinkles and lines, restoring volume to your face. When you book dermal filler treatment at Church Street Dental Practice, we’ll give you an initial assessment, then schedule your fillers, following these steps:

Facial assessment and mapping

At your first visit, Chloe will take the time to understand your skin, so your plan is built around you. We’ll take photographs of the areas most suitable for the filler.

Local anaesthesia

At your second appointment, before your dermal filler procedure, we’ll cleanse the areas where we’ll provide the injections. We’ll also give you a local anaesthetic during the procedure for your comfort.

Dermal filler injections

Dermal filler injections typically only take a few moments, but the entire process can take up to an hour depending on how many areas you’re having treated. This is because we have to massage the areas you’re having treated, evaluate the result and assess if any more filler is needed.

Aftercare and follow-up

After your fillers are finished, we’ll clean off any markings. Although any discomfort can usually be treated with over-the-counter medication, we recommend that you avoid heat and try not to touch the filled areas for 24-48 hours. We recommend that you schedule a follow-up within a few weeks to assess how things are going.

If you experience any pain or discomfort which worsens or does not improve, contact us as soon as possible.

Areas we treat

We offer a variety of profile balancing options for patients in Durham, including:

  • Lip fillers

We’ll apply a topical local anaesthetic treatment first, then use Teoxane® hyaluronic acid-based gels. These gels can restore your lips’ volume, making them fuller. In total, the procedure takes between 15 and 30 minutes.

  • Cheek fillers

Our hyaluronic acid-based cheek fillers help to contour your cheeks, restore lost volume and raise tissues that have begun to sag or thin out. Our cheek fillers are reversible and can last between 12 and 18 months.

  • Chin and jawline fillers

Chin and jawline fillers can correct imperfections in the appearance of your chin, such as it looking short, or slightly imbalanced proportions. Our fillers can sharpen the contours of your chin and jawline and reduce the appearance of jowls or sagging skin.

  • Jowl and marionette line fillers

Marionette lines run downward from the corners of your mouth to your chin, while jowls are excess skin which sags below your jawline. Dermal fillers can be used to treat these issues. They can restore lost volume and soften folds of skin. Depending on your facial structure, we may also use a strategic approach which combines this treatment with chin and jawline fillers.

  • Tear trough fillers

Tear trough fillers are an alternative to surgery. We’ll inject a very small amount of Restylane ® gel to reduce dark shadows under your eyes, smoothing your ‘tear troughs’ by restoring the lost volume in your skin.

What is profile balancing?

Your profile is how your face looks when viewed from the side. During the ageing process, or if you have experienced an injury, some medical conditions or even stress, this profile can begin to change. For example, your skin can begin to sag or become drawn and sunken, or your nose can appear more prominently. Fortunately, treating these issues is usually straightforward with modern dermal fillers, and does not necessarily require surgical intervention.

When you come in for profile balancing at our Houghton-le-Spring practice, we’ll use dermal fillers to treat your lips, nose and chin, reducing wrinkles and thinner areas of skin to create a fuller appearance. Profile balancing is a whole-face approach which provides subtle enhancements that improve and balance your facial proportions.

With profile balancing, we can avoid over-filling or making too many drastic changes to one part of your face. Compared with cosmetic treatments which only target one part of the face, profile balancing makes relatively small adjustments in a range of different areas so that your features become more proportionate.

Benefits of dermal fillers at Houghton-le-Spring

  • Fast results

Dermal fillers usually give faster results than other treatments such as polynucleotides or other skin biostimulators. You’ll also be able to go back to your normal activities soon after the treatment.

  • Dermal fillers are reversible

Hyaluronic acid is naturally found in the skin, and if you do not like the results of your dermal filler or need adjustments, Chloe can dissolve the fillers using a special enzyme.

Aftercare

For the first 24 to 48 hours, avoid touching the treated area, strenuous exercise, hot environments and alcohol, as these can affect swelling and bruising. A cold compress can help ease any discomfort. Most swelling settles within a week or two, and we’ll talk you through full aftercare guidance at your appointment.

When can you expect results from dermal fillers?

While dermal fillers can change the appearance of your skin within around 30-45 minutes, it can take a while for you to see the full benefit of the treatment. The table below gives you a typical timeline. However, some procedures may take longer or shorter depending how much filler you are having and which parts of your face are being treated.

Time after procedure What happens to your fillers
24-48 hours
  • Swelling, tenderness and mild bruising.
  • Treated areas may appear slightly over-filled or uneven
2-7 days
  • Swelling decreases and shape becomes more defined
1-2 weeks
  • The filler softens and blends with your skin
  • Most recovery completes by this point
3-4 weeks
  • Residual swelling subsides
  • Results are typically visible

Frequently asked questions

What are dermal fillers made of?

Dermal fillers are made from hyaluronic acid, a naturally occurring acid in the body which retains water and helps keep your skin hydrated. We use Restylane for our tear trough fillers and Teoxane for other areas of the face.

Where are dermal fillers used?

Dermal fillers can be used throughout your face (known as profile balancing). However, the main areas we apply dermal fillers to at Church Street Dental Practice are the lips, cheeks, tear troughs (under your eyes), chin, jowls and marionette lines (from the corners of your mouth to your chin).

Do dermal fillers hurt?

Usually not. The discomfort is usually minimal because we will apply a local anaesthetic to your face before giving you the dermal filler injection. Following the procedure you may experience some numbness or swelling, but this is temporary and any discomfort can be treated with over the counter medication.

Are there any side effects to dermal filler injections?

The most common side effects to dermal fillers are mild and will pass within a few days to weeks. They include swelling, slight bruising, tenderness and discomfort, numbness at the site where the anaesthetic was applied, or a feeling that your skin is unusually firm. Some patients may experience small, firm lumps and bumps on their skin, but these should pass within two weeks.

Very occasionally, some patients may experience more severe complications. Contact us immediately if you experience the following:

  • Severe pain which increases or is throbbing
  • Sudden vision changes or eye pain
  • Severe discolouration or mottling to the skin
  • Blistering or skin which is hot to the touch

How long do fillers last?

How long your results last depends on the area treated and the type of filler used. Cheek fillers typically last between 12 and 18 months, while lip, chin and jawline fillers tend to last slightly less, often around 9 to 12 months. Tear trough filler can last up to a year, though this varies from patient to patient. We’ll talk you through what to expect for your specific treatment during your consultation.

What is tear trough filler?

Tear trough filler is a non-surgical treatment that reduces the appearance of dark shadows and hollows under the eyes. We use a small amount of Restylane® gel to restore lost volume in this area, smoothing the transition between the lower eyelid and cheek. As with our other dermal fillers, it’s delivered by injection rather than surgery, with results typically visible within a few weeks.

How much do lip fillers cost in Durham?

Our lip fillers cost £190 for 0.5ml of filler, £220 for 0.7ml and £265 for 1ml. To explore more prices for our cosmetic treatments, please visit our fees page.
